Self Evaluation Guide

What Level Are You?

Perisher Blue Snowsports School has created an easy self evaluation guide to assist in determining ability levels.

First Timer, New to Skiing or Boarding.
Intermediate, Skiing and Boarding, Basic Turns up to Easy Moguls.
Advanced, Skiing and Boarding, Refined turns up to Dynamic turns.


Adult - Skier
Adult Skier Present Ability Goal
Level 1
First time skier. Learn basic skills; gliding on snow, turning & stopping, possibly ride a lift.
Level 2
You can stop and do basic turns. Refine turning skills; learn linked snowplow turns and how to ride a lift.
Level 3
You can ride beginner lift and make snowplow turns confidently to control speed. Learn to skid skis parallel at the end of turn, gain confidence on steeper slopes.
Level 4
You are confident riding lifts and can bring your skis parallel at the end of turns. Improve skills to ski parallel confidently on Intermediate terrain.
Level 5
You can make skidded parallel turns on Intermediate terrain. Refine style and technique to make rounded parallel turns with pole plant and ski easy moguls.
Mountain Workshop
Minimum standard: You can make short parallel turns with pole plant in all intermediate terrain and confidently ski most of the mountain. Sample topics: Dynamic short turns, refine carving skills, fall line mogul skiing, adapting to ungroomed conditions.

Adult - Boarder
Adult Boarder Present Ability Goal
Level 1
First time boarder. Learn how to control direction and ride a beginner lift.
Level 2
You can stop on both heel and toe edge. Learn to make basic turns in both directions, link turns.
Level 3
You can link skidded turns on easy terrain. Learn to link turns with confidence.
Level 4
You can link turns on intermediate terrain.
Beginning basic freestyle.
Introduce varied turn shape. Develop freestyle skills "Fakie" and basic airs. Build confidence on varied terrain.
Freeride 
Mountain Workshop
Minimum standard: You can confidently ride most of the mountain with control. Sample topics: Improving carving skills, short radius turns in fall line.
Freestyle
Mountain Workshop
Minimum standard: You can confidently ride most of the mountain with control. Sample topics: Build confidence in the air; Develop grabs and spins; Improve style and versatility in the Board Park and Half Pipe.

Kids - Skier
Kids Skier Present Ability Goal
Level 1
First time skier. Familiarisation with snow environment; learn how to stop, some direction change and how to ride the carpet.
Level 2
You can stop & do basic turns. Refine turning skills, gain confidence and learn to ride various lifts.
Level 3
You can ride a beginner lift, control speed with strong snowplow turns. Consolidate snowplow turns and develop balance over the outside ski.
Level 4
Confident riding lifts beginning to parallel on easy terrain. Improve skills to ski parallel on easy blue terrain.
Level 5
Can ski parallel on intermediate terrain. Improve edging skills, coordination and pole plant.
Kids Mountain Workshops
Minimum standard: You can make wide stance parallel turns with a pole plant in intermediate terrain. Sample topics: Develop strong short turns; Learn how to carve; Challenge your self in variable terrain and snow conditions; Ski advanced bump runs.

Kids - Boarder
 Kids Boarder Present Ability Goal
Level 1
First time boarder. Learn how to control direction and ride a beginner lift.
Level 2
Can stop and control direction. Learn to make basic turns in both directions, link turns.
Level 3
Can link skidded turns on green (easy) runs. Build confidence and refine skills.
Level 4
Can Link tuns on blue (intermediate) terrain. Beginning basic freestyle. Introduce varied turn shape. Develop freestyle skills "Fakie" and basic airs. Build confidence on varied terrain.
Kids Mountain Workshops
Minimum Standard: You can confidently ride most of the mountain with control. Sample topics: Learn short radius turns and long radius carved turns; Ride bigger jumps and bumps; Freestyle tricks and develop own free riding style.
