Perisher Blue Mountain Resort - The Future

The Vision

To become Australia's pre-eminent four season destination mountain resort, providing international class facilities, based on ecologically sustainable development principles.

The Mountain

New World class mountain and village facilities will take advantage of the geographic and topographic location of Perisher Blue that virtually guarantees that it receives more snow, over a larger area.

Implementation of the award winning Ski Slope Master Plan will ensure the efficient integration of the original four separate resorts through the modernisation of lifting, an extensive snowmaking system to take skiers from one corner of the resort to the other, under all conditions; and strategically placed on-mountain restaurant facilities to enhance and improve visitor amenity and experience.

The 2003 winter season saw the commencement of the Ski Slope Master Plan with the opening of the Village 8 Express chairlift, the first of its kind anywhere in the world outside Europe. Continued implementation in 2004 delivered new snowmaking top to bottom on Excelerator run on the Ridge Chairlift at Blue Cow, a new Superpipe and many other exciting developments.

For winter 2005, snowmaking on the ever-popular Lower Roller Coaster run at Blue Cow was the latest major development arising from the continued implementation of the Ski Slope Master Plan. Winter 2005 also saw the opening of Tube Town, Perisher Blue's exciting new Snowtube Park in Perisher Valley. Tube Town broadens the range of fun activities in the resort and will provide endless hours of fun for everyone!

In 2007, $3.6 million was invested in additional snowmaking at Blue Cow and new water supply infrastructure. Winter 2008 will see a massive $9.75 million invested in snowmaking to further improve snowmaking infrastructure and also deliver an automated snowmaking system to mid station of the Forester Express Chairlift in Perisher Valley. A new skier conveyor also replaces two rope-tows in Smiggin Holes for the 2008 winter modernising beginner lifting in that area.

The Perisher Village

For the vision to be realised, the resort will have a heart, the Perisher Village, a mountain village providing a range of entertainment and active and passive activities. A purposeful creation of a range of pleasurable activities that balance recreational, educational, retail and entertainment opportunities. The Perisher Village will incorporate the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development, from energy and water efficiency to the building materials and use of natural light. Under the plan the existing number of daytime car spaces will be maintained.

In 2003 Perisher Blue received Government approval of the Perisher Detailed Village Design Plan (DVDP) and lodged a Stage 1 Development Application for the Village Centre in late 2004. In 2004 the DVDP was recognised by the NSW Division of the Planning Institute of Australia with an Award for Excellence in Planning in the 'Urban Design - Plans and Ideas' category.

On 22 November 2006, the DVDP was approved by the NSW Minister for Planning allowing the resort to move to the next stage in the process. Unfortunately Perisher Blue has been unable to reach commercial agreement with the NSW Government to obtain the rights to develop the village. The NSW Government has indicated that it is committed to exploring other options including outside interests or developments to realise the village.
