A snow holiday is not necessarily just for the young, but they are also for the young at heart. Baby Boomers (roughly 45+ years of age, who represent about one-quarter of all visitors) have not been forgotten at Perisher, Australia’s largest and most popular alpine destination.
With great accommodation options, fabulous bars and restaurants to saviour, a variety of après entertainment to enjoy, breathtaking alpine scenery, relaxing and embracing Snowy Mountain air and not to forget the snow, Perisher is an ideal place for a winter escape!
A morning slide down freshly groomed ‘corduroy’ trails is perfect for ‘Café Cruisers’ that don’t necessarily need deep powder, steep descents and off-piste conditions to have a great time on a snow holiday. And, right now, Perisher has excellent skiing and boarding with ‘corduroy’ on tap, thanks to its outstanding snowmaking system!
Perisher’s three-year $19 million investment in automated snowmaking infrastructure has really been a bonus for guests this winter. “Snowmaking has allowed us to provide excellent skiing and snowboarding on some of the resort’s most popular runs without the need to rely on natural falls,” said Neil Thew, Manager PR and Business Development, Perisher. “The runs that we have opened are manicured overnight by our grooming team and enhanced by our 271 snow guns, enabling visitors to enjoy a quality snow experience”, said Mr Thew.
A morning on the slopes on an AM Lift Ticket (to 1:00pm) is often enough for many, so a long-lunch can be the perfect remedy to give snow legs a rest! Perisher’s Snow Gums restaurant with its’ exquisite menu and convenient location, right on the snow, is a favourite.
Afterwards a relaxing cocktail, premium wine, beer or gourmet snack in CURVE, Perisher’s newest bar, it has a very tranquil vibe and is an ideal ‘laid-back’ way to ease into the afternoon, or, to take in some après live music at one of the many pubs and bars dotted around the resort is always a popular option. Places like Bazil’s, The White Spider, the Man from Snowy River Hotel, The Sundeck and the Smiggins Hotel have regular après music (3:00-6:00pm), where you can often see revellers bopping along still in their ski boots!
For those wanting to stay out on the slopes there’s a plentiful supply of mountain cafes and kiosks where you can ski right up to their door. Cowpuccino at Blue Cow is the spot to simply refuel and have a drink on the go, Wurstman @ Happy Valley offers a genuine taste of Germany and Powder Inn at the base of the Perisher Double chair is good for a hearty meal or a snack; just to name a few.
One thing is for certain (contrary to many ill-conceived beliefs) it’s never too late to learn to ski or snowboard. Perisher’s Snowsports School has experienced instructors well versed at the needs of every student. Many first time ‘Boomers’ this season have taken the plunge, in a variety of programs well-suited to the more mature set.
For something different, a snowshoe walk through snow-covered Gum Trees can be just the answer to unwind and take in the magnificent alpine surrounds. Maybe then it’s time for a massage from Perisher’s renowned masseuse Carol Lee at the Perisher Valley Hotel (Carol’s massaging prowess is much sought after from US Presidents to a plethora of celebrities).
If the energy levels are still high at the end of the day, there’s a variety of late night places in Perisher, such as JAX Bar and Chargrill and The Man to keep you going into the wee hours.
So, a snow escape can have many options for a slightly older consumer where the focus isn’t just on skiing or boarding, but on taking in the entire resort experience. Perisher has a range of discounted weekend and extended stay packages available to snap up this season, with Last Minute and Hot Deals on offer.
